As the science of cannabis and hemp explodes with new innovations and compounds, one hemp derived cannabinoid is quickly gaining popularity and seeing rapidly increasing demand due to its powerful effects and legal status as a hemp derivative.

What is THC-O?

Anyone with an interest in therapeutic, legal hemp derived compounds, that produce potent physical and psychoactive effects, should take note of THC-O Acetate —often referred to simply as THC-O (pronounced “THC oh”) or THC-OA.

THC-O products, which are derived from federally-legal hemp, are increasingly popular in states that don’t allow legal, state-licensed delta-9 THC products.

Although many people have probably never heard of THC-O, the US military began studying its effects as far back as 1949. I

THC-O’s potency and legal status make it a very appealing option for many users seeking natural relief options. Research has shown THC-O to be three times stronger than conventional Delta-9 THC. Because of its powerful psychoactive  effects, it has often been referred to as the “psychedelic cannabinoid”.

Beyond its potency, researchers have concluded that THC-O acetate is a “prodrug,” meaning that the compound is not activated until it has been metabolized. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to kick in.

How Is THC-O Produced?

THC-O acetate production involves a series of extractions that begin with hemp flower material. Cannabidiol (CBD) is extracted from plant material in the first part of the process. The CBD is then extracted and converted to delta 8 THC. The final step involves adding a compound called acetic anhydride to the delta 8 THC to produce THC-O acetate.

The resulting THC-O should produce a light colored, almost clear oil with a consistency similar to honey or motor oil, making a perfectly suited extract to consume in THC-O vape carts, as well as THC-O edibles and tinctures.

How To Consume THC-O

THC-O has a honey-like consistency that makes it perfect for vape cartridges and this is why THC-O carts are one of the most popular ways to consume this cannabinoid.

Edibles and tinctures are also common form factors for THC-OA products, however due to the potency and latency of onset, it is important to start very low (dosage) and go slow (titration).

Another important consideration for THC-O edibles or tinctures is to look for a product that has a high ratio of CBD to THC to offset the potent psychoactive effects, to produce a more even keeled, relaxing feeling.

THC-O Legal Status

Similarly to delta-8 THC, THC-O products live in the legal margins between federally legal hemp and cannabis.

In states with cannabis legalization, regulators for the most part ignore these hemp derivative compounds since they are not part of their regulatory framework. Local law enforcement and health officials have many far more urgent issues to deal with including crime and pandemic related issues.

State-licensed cannabis companies may have concerns about hemp-derived THC products undercutting their market, but for consumers, the progress in hemp science means more options and choices for relief and recreation.
